Lincoln County Schools honor countywide young writers at April meeting

The Lincoln County Board of Education paused its regular business on Tuesday to recognize winners of a countywide ‘‘young writers’’ contest spanning grades 1–12. The superintendent introduced the program and board members and staff called students and teachers to the front to receive medallions, plaques and a superintendent’s coin of excellence.
Superintendent Barnett praised students’ ‘‘thought process’’ and creativity and said the district was ‘‘very proud of the work that goes into it.’’ Teachers and students from Midway Elementary, Hamlin PK–8, Duval PK–8, Harts PK–8, Guyan Valley Middle School, West Hamlin Elementary and Lincoln County High School were named during the ceremony; winners in upper grades included Kaylee Stevens (grades 7–8 first place) and Naveah Hatfield (grades 11–12 first place).
Board members asked winners and participants to remain for group photographs; an editor from the Lincoln Journal collected photos for publication. The president and superintendent encouraged students to continue writing and noted the district will hold additional recognitions next week for other student groups.
The recognition occurred at the start of the public meeting; the board then resumed routine business, including approval of minutes and consent items.
