Under the procedure described at the meeting, if the two sitting commissioners cannot agree on a candidate, the county party executive committee that included the late commissioner will provide a list of three nominees; commissioners will strike names in order and the remaining name will be appointed. The appointee will serve only until the November election is certified, after which the party executive committees may each nominate a candidate to run and independents may also enter the general election.
Commissioners expressed regret at the loss and extended condolences to the family, who were present. The board emphasized the appointment is a short‑term measure to ensure representation until voters choose a successor in November.
