Board approves 2026–27 service agreements, K‑4 math adoption and graduation lists; honors choirs, bands and athletes

The Valerious City School Board on May 6 approved multiple superintendent action items for the 2026–27 school year and recognized students and coaches for recent academic and athletic achievements.
Superintendent Ann Slash presented a package of approvals the board voted to accept: a primary service agreement with the Lorraine County ESC for 2026–27; a MARS (mental health, addiction and recovery services) agreement for 2026–27; a partnership and early college contract with LCC; Yria High summer-school fees as posted; the Amplify K‑4 math agreement; and an Envision contract for grades 6–8 not to exceed $60,000.
"They really went above and beyond in helping us in the partnership so that we can keep that program alive and well," Slash said, thanking staff who helped review materials for the curriculum adoptions and contracts.
During the meeting the board also approved the early college graduation list (pending completion of requirements) with one abstention recorded and approved Malaria High School's list of 408 graduating seniors. Members moved and carried routine treasurer and personnel items connected to the district reduction plan, including revised reduction-in-force resolutions, resignations, recalls, and supplemental contract approvals.
Before the business agenda, the board recognized the treble choir and a cappella choir for top ratings at the OMA adjudicated contests and state adjudicated contest; band directors and band students were also honored for contest ratings. Athletic recognitions included Coach Brett Ler and a boys basketball team that reached the Elite Eight with 19 wins and wrestling program highlights from Paul Felton and Armando Torres, who named student athletes and state qualifiers.
The board completed its second reading of policies and approved a resolution supporting the fair school funding plan, then voted to enter an executive session to prepare for negotiations with public employees concerning compensation and terms and conditions of employment.
