Talbot County council hears updates on food programs after CDBG-CV funding; agencies report rising need

At a May 12 public hearing, Talbot County grants administrator Mary Kay reviewed CDBG-CV funding directed to local food-security programs: prior allocations in 2020 and early 2025 and a later additional allocation of $75,000 for each subrecipient in late 2025.
Mary Kay said the Neighborhood Service Center and St. Michael's Community Center used earlier funds for shelving, a lift gate for delivery, refrigeration, HVAC replacement and staffing. Through 2026, the Neighborhood Service Centers allocation supported delivery infrastructure and staffing; Mary Kay said the neighborhood program has assisted 357 households and 707 individuals to date. St. Michael's reported providing 50,494 meals across three food programs in 2025 and expected to exceed that total in 2026.
Amy Horn, executive director of St. Michael's Community Center, thanked the council and county staff for assistance, described expanded hours and mobile distribution, and recounted a recent case illustrating the immediate need for food access.
Speakers noted new evening hours to serve working residents who could not attend daytime distributions, and representatives described coordination among local providers to expand reach and purchasing power. County staff said remaining grant invoices are being processed and funds must be spent by June 2026 per grant timelines.
The council closed the public hearing after hearing from nonprofit representatives and members of the public; no objections were raised.
