The Allegany County Board of Education spent the early portion of its May 12 meeting recognizing students and community partners.
Andrea Craft, communications manager at the Chamber of Commerce, presented the WCBC Student Salute scholarships. She said the program, supported by the chamber, WCBC and Ches Federal Credit Union, has awarded about $190,000 in scholarships and this year named winners including Bryley Lindterberg ($5,000), Miley Anderson ($500) and Colton Garry ($500). "We wish you the very best," Craft said as recipients received applause and certificates.
Dr. Sarah Walsh introduced the district27s Carson Scholars, highlighting academic performance (3.75 GPA minimum) and humanitarian work. Several students were named and acknowledged by teachers and principals for leadership and community service.
Sheri Snyder of the Allegany County Women27s Action Coalition presented the $1,000 Changemaker Scholarship to Shaylee Annan of Mountain Ridge High School. Annan told the board: "I feel like a lot of the time we wait for change whether that be from politicians or billionaires. But I want you to know change starts here with us, me and you."
The board also issued proclamations recognizing School Lunch Hero Day (May 1), Pupil Personnel Worker Month (May) and National Teacher Appreciation Week (May 42D8). Michelle Seville accepted the teacher-appreciation proclamation on behalf of the association and thanked the board for the recognition.
The recognitions emphasized student achievement, community partnerships and the daily role of school staff in supporting students.
What happens next: Recipients were invited to take photos; scholarship sponsors and district staff will follow up with details for award distribution.
