Park City Council voted to adopt Ordinance 1240-2026, which permits expanded hours for the sale and consumption of alcoholic liquor at on‑premises drinking establishments during the period surrounding the FIFA 2026 World Cup.
Staff explained the city’s ordinance is narrower than recent state legislation: it applies only to licensed drinking establishments within city limits and does not change hours for retail liquor stores, private clubs or other businesses licensed for off‑premises sales. The ordinance, as read at the meeting, would allow service from 6:00 a.m. through 5:00 a.m. the following day for the period June 11–19, 2026—effectively permitting service during up to 23 of 24 hours for establishments that remain open during that window.
Councilmembers debated public‑safety and enforcement implications. One councilmember told colleagues he had consulted with the police chief and did not expect a staffing shortfall; others noted the practical effect might be limited by match times and typical business hours. Councilmember Troy Hill moved to approve Ordinance 1240-2026; the motion passed 5–1 with Councilmember John Wells voting no.
The ordinance takes effect per the city’s normal procedure; staff and the police department will monitor for enforcement implications during the event period.
