Humboldt County approves one-year sheriff and dispatch contracts with wage increases

The Humboldt County Board of Supervisors approved two union contracts affecting sheriff’s office employees and county dispatchers.
County negotiators explained that the deputies’ contract keeps existing step structures aligned with upcoming county-wide step increases while jailers will receive a 5% across-the-board increase. The dispatch contract raised starting wages to $25.50 an hour (0–12 months), $26.00 an hour (1–2 years), and $26.50 for dispatchers with more than two years’ experience; the agreement also removed a comp-time/holiday vacation provision intended to reduce excessive comp time for employees who previously received both holiday pay and vacation credit.
The board approved the sheriff’s contract and then the dispatch contract by voice votes. Officials said both contracts are one-year agreements and will go into effect July 1; final signed copies will follow attorney review and signatures from union representatives.
Board members noted the changes are intended to improve recruitment and retention for dispatch positions and to align sheriff’s office wages with county step increases.
