The Rockford Public Schools board voted to approve construction of an ADA-compliant switch-back ramp to improve access to the Parkside ECC playground, accepting the low bid and authorizing work to begin Summer 2026.
Sean Hayward, the district's director of operations, told the board that four contractors bid the job and Burgess Concrete was the low bidder at $47,300. Hayward described line items including site logistics (temporary fencing for summer-school safety) and general conditions; he said the district’s budget for the project was $67,500 and the low bid came in about $400 under that amount.
An OAK representative described the ramp as a switch-back solution needed to regrade the hill and provide a smooth ADA approach from the existing walkway down to the playground.
Trustees moved and approved the project so construction can begin this summer, with funding coming from 2019 bond proceeds.
What happens next: staff will proceed with contracting and summer construction; operations will coordinate temporary fencing and schedule work to minimize disruption to summer programs.
