Rockford board narrows trustee vacancy to five interviewees, schedules May 14 special meeting

Dr. Wilson Crawford told trustees the board had used a rubric based on MASB guidance that rated candidates across five criteria (visionary leadership and student advocacy; ethical governance and board role awareness; fiscal and operational accountability; collaborative teamwork; community representation). Scores ranged from 0 to 15, and staff suggested a typical first cut of roughly one-third. Using that guidance, an 11-point cut line produced five interviewees.
Trustees debated the size of an interview pool and the logistics of 20–30 minute interviews. "I think we can do this. It's three hours plus because it's interview plus deliberation," one trustee said in support; several trustees voiced comfort with interviewing five candidates. The motion to interview the top five passed unanimously.
Board members further moved, and approved, a special meeting for Thursday at 6 p.m. for interviews and public comment. Trustees said questions will be the same for every candidate and deliberations will occur in open session; staff will notify applicants of their status.
The board must appoint and swear in a replacement within 30 days of Trustee Anderson's resignation. Dr. Crawford reminded the board that if an appointment is not completed by May 20, 2026, the ISD would fill the vacancy.
Public commenters had urged the board to avoid conflicts of interest in the appointment process; several asked that trustees who plan to run in the upcoming election consider recusal from the selection. The board did not adopt any automatic-recusal rule but acknowledged the public concerns and will proceed with the scheduled interviews.
What happens next: the board will interview the five candidates at the special meeting, deliberate in open session, and make an appointment before the May 20 deadline.
