Custer County to sell aging grader, purchase newer used machine to reduce maintenance costs

Road & Bridge staff told the board the county will purchase a 2021 grader (lower hours, about 2,700) previously used in Chaffee County and recommended selling the county's current 2008 John Deere grader because of high repair costs (transmission replacement estimated $22,000–$25,000; engine replacement ~ $40,000; fuel-system repairs up to $15,000).
Staff said the 2008 grader averages heavy maintenance costs and frequent downtime and that selling it would reduce repair-related disruptions. The county recommended a minimum opening bid of $70,000 for the surplus grader and said it would post the sale on a government auction site (govdeals) and other platforms to reach local contractors.
Commissioner Lucas and others noted the purchase had been discussed in earlier workshops and that capital improvement funds would be used for the buy; staff also said they are working with John Deere on lease-structure options to even out future payments. The board moved, seconded and voted to approve listing the grader with a $70,000 minimum bid and proceed with the purchase plan.
