Committee forwards Greenville County Library FY2027 millage request to full council

Ms. James, speaking for the library, said the library’s operating millage was rolled back by reassessment ‘‘from 6.3 to 5.6’’ and the capital millage was reduced ‘‘from 1.2 to 1.1,’’ but that the library board reduced a requested additional cut and is requesting a total millage of 6.6 for the coming year. She told the committee the system is busy: ‘‘we're on track to exceed 1.3 million in the circulation of physical items both print and non-print … and the downloadable items will probably surpass 3 million.’’
Council Long and other members asked about priorities and usage. Ms. James said the library is saving for preventive maintenance and to replace aging equipment, citing recent air-conditioning failures at the Pelham Road branch, and reported ‘‘give or take 200,000 active users or active library cards right now.’’ Councilor Collins pressed on card issuance and usage and Ms. James explained cards are issued for two years and must be renewed or updated.
After member questions, the committee made a motion to approve forwarding the millage request to full council; the motion carried on a voice vote. The committee did not record a roll-call tally in the transcript.
The item will next appear before the full Greenville County Council for final action.
