Board declines proposed Native Prairie Reserve arrangement after debate

The Normandy Schools Collaborative board debated and ultimately did not approve a proposed Native Prairie Reserve partnership with Beyond Housing during its May 12 meeting.
Director Diana Davis Day urged the board to honor earlier decisions to take no action on surplus properties until a buildings-and-grounds survey is complete, saying the board had voted three times to refrain from action. "We voted three times now to not take any action on this piece of property," Davis Day said, urging the item be removed or denied.
Supporters argued the proposal would not incur immediate district costs and could benefit students and teachers over time. The motion on the floor was to approve the Native Prairie Reserve "as presented." Roll-call votes recorded multiple 'no' votes and abstentions and the motion did not pass.
The board did not move forward with the Beyond Housing arrangement; members said they would continue work on facilities surveys and studies before taking action on district properties.
The board later continued with other consent items.
