Committee reviews proposed food-waste drop-off at Metroparks Side Cut; partners may cover startup costs

Committee members discussed a proposal to host a food-waste drop-off at the Metroparks Side Cut (Seagar Lake/Seagar Lake parking lot) in partnership with Keep Toledo/Lucas County Beautiful and Go Zero.

Members said site preparation would require a concrete pad for the bins, fencing and signage. Committee members reported that Keep Toledo/Lucas County Beautiful had contacted city staff about assisting with startup costs and that a local business partner identified by that nonprofit had expressed willingness to cover fencing and signage for initial setup. Operating costs for hauling and processing the material would be handled by Go Zero, which would carry the waste to its facility for industrial composting.

The plan described a drop-off model used in nearby jurisdictions (including Parisburg and Bowling Green) where residents bring pre-bucketed food waste to a supervised drop-off site. The committee discussed next steps — confirming a partner’s written commitment, identifying an exact parking-lot location at the Side Cut, and securing a concrete pad and fencing before launch.

Committee members cautioned that details on ongoing operating fees and exact partner commitments are not yet finalized and said they would wait for written confirmation before committing city resources.
