Committee schedules public comment after hearing grant-backed disc-golf proposal

Committee members were told the finance director submitted grant applications intended to cover roughly half the equipment cost, with the grant written to request funding for up to nine baskets. A staff member addressed as Sprout said the baskets in the grant application amount to “a little over $5,000” and that baskets cannot be ordered until the grant is approved if they are to be covered by the award.
The committee discussed timing and construction logistics. Members noted staff availability will determine when service-department crews can install concrete tee pads and set baskets. One member said the work could start quickly if staff time is available, but cautioned that staff schedules may delay construction. The committee also confirmed the budget includes a set-aside—members referenced figures in the neighborhood of $19,000–$22,000—for the broader course build-out.
Greg Galer, a parks-and-recreation commission member who spoke from the podium, raised concerns about early-season wet conditions at the proposed site and recommended public input before construction. Galer said some locations were “still wet two weeks ago in some places,” noting that water and ground saturation could limit usability during spring.
Committee members also discussed course design and environmental concerns: they emphasized minimizing tree clearing, preserving existing vegetation to create a tighter course, and setting pads where foot traffic will keep walking paths maintained. The group agreed to include a public-comment period at the next committee meeting so residents can raise concerns about proximity to homes, wildlife and course layout.
Next steps: the committee will place the disc-golf plan on the next meeting agenda for public comment and await grant notification before ordering baskets or beginning major site work.
