Richfield council advances ordinance keeping council pay flat for 2027–28
Summary
Council Member Burke moved and the Richfield City Council approved a first reading of an ordinance to amend city code so mayor and council member salaries remain unchanged (zero percent increase) for 2027 and 2028; the second reading is scheduled for May 26, 2026.
The Richfield City Council on May 12 approved the first reading of an ordinance to amend subsection 210.01 of the city code (Chapter 2, Section 210) so that mayor and council member salaries will not increase for 2027 and 2028.
Council Member Burke said it "seems like the wrong time for the city council to be asking for a salary increase" and that a zero-percent change was appropriate given economic conditions for many residents. Staff noted the code requires council review of salaries in election years and that any adopted ordinance would not take effect until after the next municipal election.
The motion to approve the first reading was moved, seconded and carried by voice vote. The council scheduled a second reading of the ordinance for May 26, 2026.
