Mitchell graduate urges board to expand field house access for off-season athletes

During public comment at the Mitchell Community Schools Board of Trustees meeting, Dr. Stroud, who identified as a Mitchell graduate, urged the board to expand access to the district's field house for athletes who are out of season or lack private training resources. "For some kids... athletics can obviously open the door for a lot of kids in the community that don't have the means to go to school or afford to school or get some scholarships to play," Dr. Stroud said, adding that limited facility access can "squander" those opportunities.
Dr. Stroud said the district previously had positions or volunteers who ran strength and conditioning programs and asked the board to consider creating a similar paid or assigned role to provide regular access and trained supervision in the weight room. "I'm curious what we're going to do to try to ... get a position like that for our kids," Dr. Stroud said.
Board Chair Mr. Tanksley responded briefly and said the board would "take that into consideration and discuss it." No formal directive or vote on facility access or staffing changes was recorded during the meeting.
