Mitchell Community Schools trustees approve coaching appointments, virtual academy handbook and staffing changes

The Mitchell Community Schools Board of Trustees on Monday approved multiple personnel recommendations and program updates, including coaching appointments for fall sports, a paid event-supervisor proposal and the 2026–2027 Bluejacket Virtual Academy handbook.
Mr. Hines presented personnel business and the board accepted the resignation of Zach Burns as girls golf coach and approved about two dozen paid and volunteer coaching recommendations for fall athletics. "I'd like to start by accepting the resignation of Zach Burns," Hines said, and then listed recommended coaches and volunteers for soccer, volleyball, football, dance and junior-high programs. Patrick moved to approve the personnel slate; Kyle seconded, and the motion passed 5–0.
Hines also proposed creating a paid event supervisor role to ensure adult coverage at multiple events when school administrators cannot be present, recommending two people at $80 per night. He estimated the district would need that coverage "maybe four" nights a year. Patrick moved to approve the recommendation; Steve seconded and the vote was 5–0.
The board approved a request from prior sponsors to close the dormant Mitchell Junior High School Garden Club account and transfer the remaining $371 to the Mitchell Junior High School 5K account on a motion by Patrick, seconded by Kyle; the motion carried 5–0.
On staff contracts, the board voted to add 15 days to the teaching contracts of two high school counselors, Leslie Slaughter and Andrea McIntosh, to cover duties at the beginning and end of the school year. Chris Shaw made the motion and Kyle seconded; the vote was 5–0.
Mr. Carlson presented the 2026–2027 Bluejacket Virtual Academy handbook, describing it as an expansion of existing virtual course offerings that adds live instruction, office hours and live tutoring so enrolled students can earn a district-issued diploma while accessing co-curricular activities such as athletics and band. "It's still self-paced," Carlson said, "but they would have the opportunity to have a live instructor." Steve moved to approve the handbook; Chris Shaw seconded and the board approved it unanimously.
The board also corrected an administrative date on the consent agenda (nurses' conference submission dated April 14 was corrected to June 16–17) and approved the consent agenda by a 5–0 vote.
The meeting concluded with the board announcing a special session on May 20 at 5:00 p.m., followed by an executive session, and confirming Mitchell High School commencement on May 22 at 7:00 p.m. with livestream plans.
