Yelm proclaims May 2026 Bicycle Month; Inner City Transit outlines community challenge and events

Mayor Joe Peno read a proclamation declaring May 2026 as Bicycle Month in Yelm and recognized the 39th annual Bicycle Community Challenge during the council’s May 12 meeting.
Ally Fuller, coordinator for Inner City Transit’s Walk and Roll program and the Thurston County Bicycle Community Challenge, thanked the council and described the challenge as free and open to all ages, with prizes to encourage participation. Fuller said the program taught roughly 2,600 people bicycle safety skills in 2025, provided about 277 new or refurbished bicycles and participants logged more than 76,000 miles in 2025; Fuller said the challenge had logged about 25,000 miles so far in May 2026.
Fuller encouraged residents to take part in upcoming events including Bike Anywhere Day on May 14, a Bike Month celebration ride on May 20 to Tom Water Historical Park and a youth bike summit ride on May 31. Fuller said the program’s ‘‘primary goal is always just to get more people on bikes during the month of May.’’
The council thanked Fuller and posed informal questions about local trails and bike facilities; the proclamation was followed by a photo opportunity.
