BO Companies presents local history book; author calls memories 'living documents'

Steven Abear, representing BO Companies, presented a history book about the family and company to the Broussard City Council on May 12 and invited council members to a reception and signing on May 27.
Abear described the book as a long-term board project, tracing the family from a risky transatlantic crossing in the 1830s to the company's later transitions from agriculture to commercial real estate. He said the book covers local institutions, generational stories and industrial history that shaped the city.
Author Dr. Lana Henry addressed council and said much of the book's value comes from oral history. "A lot of this history comes from the memories of people like yourselves," she told attendees, adding that local recollections are "living documents" that help make history tangible. She described details she gathered from interviews and archival sources, and invited people who remember the town's landscape or who worked at the sugar mill to share anecdotes.
Council thanked the presenters and agreed to a group photo and reception following the meeting.
