At the May 12 meeting Mayor Buds described the city's new Blue Zone initiative aimed at senior health and fall prevention.
The mayor said the initiative provides diagnostic equipment to test seniors' grip strength, balance and mobility and that a private donor contributed equipment the mayor estimated at close to $300,000 in value. He added that graduate students from the University of Southern California will provide physical-therapy training for seniors in need.
The mayor framed the program as proactive prevention: he said the number-one debilitating event for people over 60 is a sudden fall on level ground and that early diagnostics can identify risks before falls occur. No funding ordinance or contract details were presented at the meeting; the mayor spoke about the initiative as a recently opened program and then adjourned the meeting.
