Shakopee board approves student representative, personnel renewals and response to Native American parent advisory committee

The Shakopee School Board approved several governance items May 11, including the appointment of a recommended student ex‑officio board member, renewal of probationary teacher contracts and a formal response to a non‑concurrence letter from the district’s Native American Parent Advisory Committee (NAPAC).

Board members described a robust interview process for the student seat: staff and board interviewers met seven candidates and recommended Clara (start date July 1, 2026) as the next ex‑officio student representative. The motion to approve the recommendation passed unanimously.

Human resources director Keith Gray presented nine probationary teacher renewals. Board members confirmed renewals were based on end‑of‑year performance evaluations under Minnesota statute; the board approved the list by motion.

District leadership presented a written response to NAPAC’s non‑concurrence letter, structured around five items in the advisory committee’s letter: tribal‑nations training for staff and board members; intentional inclusion of native perspectives in curriculum planning; increased staffing and use of Indian education funding where possible; implementation of the Dreamcatcher project in partnership with NAPAC; and shared responsibility for consistent implementation across the district. The board approved sending the response and committed to continuing partnership with NAPAC and the district’s Indian education team.

Board members closed the meeting with committee and community reports and recognized a departing ex‑officio student member for her service.
