The Town of Bristol voted to raise its financial support for the Bristol Police Youth Leadership Academy from $1,500 to $2,000. Sergeant Kyle Batista, who will run the program this year, told the council the academy is entering its ninth season, fills quickly, and is designed for roughly 8–14-year-olds (with older teens serving as junior counselors). He described the camp’s mission as building leadership, honesty and integrity, and said the program is capped at about 50 participants; the camp is scheduled for Aug. 10–14 at the town beach with a ropes-course day in Storrs, Connecticut.
Councilmembers praised the program’s role in youth development and agreed the increased town support will help maintain low fees for participants. The motion to increase the payment to $2,000 was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote. Sergeant Batista thanked the council and noted there are only a handful of open slots remaining.
