Public Works staff explained they routinely participate in cooperative procurement and that Detroit Salt has been a reliable supplier. The staff report said the city currently holds roughly 750 tons in inventory and will consider summer purchases to top off supplies at favorable prices. The contract includes a 5% annual price escalation for up to four years; funding will be split between the local roads and major roads accounts.
Council voted to approve the contract; staff advised the council that the city can exercise near-term purchases under current agreements if advantageous and will schedule ordinary seasonal purchases in late summer or early fall.
