City staff briefed the council on two facility items: a proposed E‑911 disaster recovery and backup data center and a separate proposal to relocate Tuscaloosa Fire & Rescue administration into an east precinct building.
IT staff said the city currently maintains two primary server locations and that the 911 facility's data room has been used for public‑safety equipment and backups but has outgrown its original capacity. To improve resilience and provide room for growth, staff said they are "looking to have a ... disaster recovery and backup data center on this side of the river and with more physical adjacency to city facilities," noting needs for additional electrical, cooling and generator capacity.
Fire staff proposed moving five administrative personnel — deputy chiefs, special projects staff and the chief — into an East Precinct building that would require mainly cosmetic upgrades such as signage, lighting and interior finishes. The relocation was presented as a way to avoid reshaping logistics/storage space and to have administrative offices co‑located adjacent to a fire station.
Council members asked about alternatives such as moving into the logistics building and the implications for storage; staff said moving into logistics would consume needed storage space, while the East Precinct option requires less structural work and preserves logistics capacity.
The items were presented for consideration as part of the capital projects review; the transcript records questions and clarifications but no final council action on funding or approval.
