The Willow Springs R-IV board meeting opened with a student presentation as fourth-grader Abigail Novakova read a letter that earned her a Missouri Lieutenant Governor's Award for American Patriotism.
Shelley Rickard, the district's English learner teacher, introduced Abigail and said the student's letter placed in the top 10 of a contest in which English learners wrote to the Missouri lieutenant governor. Rickard told the board Abigail "will read her letter aloud" in Jefferson City and receive the Honorable Lieutenant Governor's Award for American Patriotism.
In her reading Abigail Novakova said, "I love America because God gave me freedom. I can go to any church I want and read the Bible in my home," and described her family's Ukrainian background and her plans to attend college and become a judge. The board responded with applause and praise for the student and her family.
The presentation occurred near the start of the meeting and was followed by routine administrative reports; the board did not take formal action on the presentation itself. The district noted the recognition as a positive start to the meeting and thanked Rickard and Abigail for representing Willow Springs Elementary.
