Policy committee previews draft 2027–28 school calendar, asks staff to continue outreach

Committee members reviewed a draft 2027–28 Portland Public Schools calendar and provided initial feedback, but took no formal vote.

Dr. Sarah Warren said the district is aiming to publish calendars two years in advance to give families and staff more notice and to help partner districts and CTE partners coordinate. She noted the statutory requirement (as stated in the meeting) to adopt a calendar by April each year and explained the draft’s structure: 180 total days including 175 instructional days, traditional winter, February and April breaks, and union-requested professional-development days.

The draft schedules grades 1–12 to start the Monday before Labor Day with four teacher days preceding student arrival and preserves added holidays such as Yom Kippur and Eid. Committee members noted an unusual calendar detail for fall 2027: Indigenous Peoples Day and Yom Kippur are projected to fall on the same date, creating options about when to observe each holiday.

Members raised operational concerns about the draft’s potentially early mid-June student release (a projected June 9 last day if there are no storm days) and asked staff to consult municipal recreation and summer-program partners to avoid leaving families with gaps in child-care options. Dr. Warren said staff will engage unions, cabinet and external partners, incorporate guardrails the committee suggests, and bring a revised draft back to the committee for a future vote.
