Students honored, peer‑buddy program and environmental projects showcased at Canon City board meeting

The Canon City School Board opened its May 11 meeting by recognizing student achievements. The board congratulated Encore for winning the 2026 Colorado State Show Choir Championship and celebrated Striata, the district's new vocal ensemble, for winning the Colorado State Jazz Choir Championship. Directors Ryan Walter and accompanist Damian Cadell were singled out for their roles in the programs.
Monthly student awards were presented: seventh grader Hazen Lloyd and eighth grader Kaylee Hall received recognition for academic performance and leadership. Elementary students from Lincoln described the peer buddy program, which pairs general education students with peers to build relationships and social skills, and fourth graders presented a littering‑prevention project and an after‑school event series called "Thrilling Thursdays." The students explained how trash reduction and family activities improve school life.
The board also unanimously proclaimed May as Educator Appreciation Month, citing the Fremont Re‑1 School District's teachers, counselors and staff for their service to students and the community.
Board members took photos with student groups and thanked staff for organizing assemblies and recognition events. No formal votes were required for these recognitions and presentations.
