Cabarrus County Schools honors students, teachers and VEX teams at May 11 meeting

At its May 11 business meeting the Cabarrus County Board of Education celebrated student and staff achievements across the district, presenting Impact Through Education awards, teacher and counselor honors, and recognizing several robotics teams and scholarship recipients.
Board Chair Rob Walter introduced the evening’s recognitions, and Phil Fur presented the Impact Through Education awards sponsored by Equitable. Winners from WR Odell Primary included second-graders Joshua Chin and Sydney Reynolds, support staff Sharon James, and teacher Lori Tong; Concord High honorees included Gabriella Claros, Dulce Velasquez, staff member Tony Lomier and teacher William Taylor.
Dr. Michael Williams presented the Hillbish Ford Teacher of the Month for May, naming Destiny Hunter, a music teacher at Wineoff Elementary School, and thanked Hillbish Ford representatives Tim Vaughn and Josh Forester for sponsorship. The Everyday Hero Award, sponsored by Great Wolf Lodge, honored Patriots Elementary cafeteria manager Audrey Honeyut for leadership and service in auxiliary operations.
The district also highlighted music and performing-arts achievements: Harris Road Middle and Concord High students earned superior ratings at state Music Performance Assessments and several students were selected for North Carolina all-state ensembles. Mr. Bart Dolberg and program directors recognized multiple ensembles and students.
Cabarrus County’s VEX Robotics program was a particular focus: Rebecca Welsh and STEM lead Jennifer Caligan celebrated seven teams that qualified for the 2026 VEX Robotics World Championship in St. Louis and noted program growth to 103 teams districtwide with 504 student participants this year. Coaches and student rosters from Wineoff Elementary, Harold E. Winkler Middle School and Cabarrus Early College of Technology were called forward.
Counseling and scholarship recognitions included Laney Wagner as School Counselor of the Year and multiple graduating seniors awarded full-ride scholarships or prestigious academic programs (including Park Scholarship, QuestBridge and others); the board applauded students not present who earned awards and honored those who attended.
What’s next: These recognitions conclude the district’s 2025–26 awards season and the district will continue to publicize student and staff honors through its communications channels.
