The Hammond City Council on Monday received the mayor's proposed budget for fiscal year 2026–27 and set a timetable for review and adoption.
"I'm about to distribute um hard copies of our proposed FY27, the mayor's proposed FY27 budget," said Charles Barer, who presented the document to the council and public. He said department heads have prepared notes to explain larger changes and that the administration would post the budget on the city's website.
Barer told the council the formal process will include a budget work session scheduled for May 29 and a public hearing on June 9; the council must vote on the budget by its June 23 meeting for the plan to take effect July 1. "If there are any questions, comments about the budget, please feel free to reach out to myself, the mayor, Carolyn," Barer said, asking members to coordinate with staff ahead of the work session.
Council members were urged to contact Mr. Spangler with district-specific requests before the May 29 meeting; one council member said the administration will schedule individual follow-ups as needed.
Next steps: the council will consider the mayor's budget at the May 29 work session with department heads present and hold a public hearing June 9; adoption is expected no later than June 23 to meet the July 1 effective date.
