Eagle River historical society seeks to restore 'Pipplesfield' name for town square park

Patty Wilson of the Chugiak–Eagle River Historical Society asked the commission to rename the Eagle River Town Square Park portion (commonly known locally as Pickles Field) to recognize Walt and Mel Pipple, homesteaders who farmed the site in the mid 20th century.
Wilson described the historical significance and said the historical society has begun outreach to the Eagle River Chamber and local service clubs for letters of support. Staff explained the process: the commission will forward the nomination packet to the Eagle River Parks and Recreation Board of Supervisors for an advisory opinion, accept written testimony and letters of support, hold a public hearing with at least 21 days' notice, and then consider a recommendation that would go to the assembly.
Commissioners encouraged proposers to compile historical documentation and letters of support and suggested fall timing for a public hearing, noting the commission is still learning the new process and the parks board may schedule its own review before the commission acts.
