Henrico schools honored for music education; chorus teacher named county teacher of the year and Grammy quarterfinalist

Henrico County Public Schools was recognized for the 27th consecutive year as a "Best Community for Music Education" by the National Association of Music Merchants, the district announced at its board meeting. Dr. Leslie Hughes, the district's chief learning officer, said the award reflects sustained leadership in music instruction and equitable access to arts programming.
"This wonderful performance we just heard perfectly leads us to the first recognition of tonight," Dr. Leslie Hughes said, and credited the division's music educators and staff for the repeated honor. Education specialist for performing arts Chris Mosley and lead music teacher Aaron Franklin accepted the award on behalf of the division.
The board also presented a highlight video honoring Jordan Satderfield, Henrico's 2026 Teacher of the Year and a chorus teacher at Quioccasin Middle School. The video showed classroom instruction and included student testimonials about Satderfield's impact on classroom culture and musical achievement.
Board member Mr. Shay added that Satderfield has been named a quarterfinalist for the Grammy Educator of the Year award, an honor that recognizes outstanding music teachers nationally. The board and district officials congratulated Satderfield and thanked music staff and families for their support.
No formal action was required for the recognitions; the meeting proceeded to other agenda items after the presentations.
