Committee approves part-time IT position after discussion and disclosure of relationship
Summary
Committee approved a $25,000 part-time IT position and a $2,000 laptop for data processing. Commissioner Ford disclosed that Miss Thomas, who currently handles much IT work, is his wife; he said that did not obviate the county's need for an IT resource.

The Budget and Finance Committee approved creating a part-time IT position in the data processing budget, funding it at $25,000 with $2,000 for a laptop.
The mayor and other commissioners said the county needs a dedicated IT resource to reduce outsourced costs and improve response times when county systems fail. The mayor said at least one qualified person has offered to serve part time.
Commissioner Ford disclosed a personal connection to current in-house IT support during the discussion. "My reason for bringing this up is one, yes, she is happens to be my wife and I don't want there to be some sort of conflict of interest brought up in the discussion," he said, while also arguing that countywide IT needs justify the new position. The disclosure was recorded on the transcript; commissioners proceeded to vote and the motion to approve the part-time IT position carried.
Miss Overman said she hesitated to create a new position but moved to approve; Bubba Gregory seconded. The committee did not discuss hiring specifics such as position title or job posting details in this session; staff will return with implementation steps if the commission approves filling the role.
