Bethel Local facilities committee prioritizes near-term fieldhouse, stadium upgrades and transportation planning

The Bethel Local Schools facilities committee met Wednesday, May 13, 2026, and identified a near-term fieldhouse and stadium upgrades as its top short-term priorities, while advancing planning work on relocating varsity baseball and a future transportation facility.

Committee members said they have re-opened drawings from a three-year-old fieldhouse plan and shared them with educational planner FMD to produce two to three updated design options and cost estimates. The committee was told some foundation materials from the earlier project (rebar for footers) remain on site and vendors are re-quoting prices. "We still have those original drawings and FMD is helping us re-evaluate what that building's going to look like," a committee member said.

Why it matters: committee members said a functioning fieldhouse is essential for safety, locker rooms and restrooms while the district plans a long-term high school project. Members expressed a preference for a facility that can be expanded later rather than a temporary setup that would soon be displaced by a new high school.

Timing and cost: members acknowledged that completing a new fieldhouse by August was not realistic. One committee member said major site work would likely start after football season: "There's no way we'd be able to start moving dirt... probably sometime in November," the member said. For a full athletic center with extensive additions, the committee discussed planning-level estimates in the multi‑million‑dollar range; one participant noted a five‑to‑six‑million‑dollar order of magnitude for a large facility, while the committee continues to evaluate smaller interim options.

Other short-term facility moves: administrators reported summer classroom conversions that will re-purpose large spaces into two rooms for pull-out interventions, convert an old kitchen into an art room, and restore a library/multi-use space. These were described as smaller, nonstructural projects that can be completed without major construction.

Stadium and bleachers: the committee asked bleacher contractor Farnum to produce several options for expanding visitor and home seating while accommodating a planned north-end stadium entrance. Members discussed improving concessions, restrooms and announcements capabilities to match what visiting programs provide.

Baseball relocation and transportation planning: relocating varsity baseball onto campus was discussed as a step that could free the current bus/transportation area for a future dedicated transportation facility. Members said Mercer Group previously measured campus acreage and confirmed a varsity baseball field could fit in a tight footprint, though drainage and backstop placement would require attention. "If baseball moves, that opens up room for the transportation dream — building parking, a mechanic bay and staff parking," a committee member said. Committee staff will request feasibility numbers (acreage, parking needs and access) to inform decisions.

Funding and partnerships: members discussed funding sources including OFCC co‑funding, grants and local benefactors. They also explored township partnerships to restore youth fields at Friendship Park and apply for recreation grants for community amenities such as tennis courts with pickleball overlays. Members said some township-funded work remains unfinished (for example, fencing/backstops at Friendship Park) and volunteers or township funds might complete it if cost estimates are produced.

Next steps: FMD is expected to present two or three fieldhouse options and preliminary costs in June for the facilities committee to consider and forward a recommendation to the board of education. The committee set a workshop for May 19 and scheduled regular meetings for June 10, July 8 and August 12.
