HCCAA seeks $5,000 from Mills County to shore up senior meals as federal funding fell

Ashley Johnson of the Hill Country Community Action Association briefed Mills County commissioners on May 11 about senior-nutrition and energy-assistance services and requested the agency's customary $5,000 county contribution to support the TDA match for meals.
Johnson said the senior center served nearly 5,000 meals but that funding for senior nutrition had been ‘‘decimated’’ in recent years, forcing the agency to cut meals. The HCCAA seeks $5,000 to provide the TDA match (50 cents per meal) and apply those funds directly to the meals program; she said the request letter would be submitted to the county within the next two weeks.
Commissioners asked about daily meal volume; Johnson said the congregate meal program serves roughly 50 meals per day in Mills County. She also said HCCAA is pursuing foundation and veterans grant funding and encouraged commissioners and the public to send information about possible funding sources.
The court thanked HCCAA for the report but did not take a funding vote at the meeting. Commissioners said they would consider the request during the budget process and invited HCCAA to return with any additional documentation commissioners might need for budgeting.
