Danville to pursue $12.6 million Safe Streets for All grant for western-bypass intersection improvements

Danville staff told the City Commission on May 11 they would pursue a Safe Streets for All (SS4A) grant from the Federal Highway Administration to fund intersection-safety improvements on the planned western bypass.
Palmer Engineering provided updated cost estimates that raised the total project amount to $12.6 million, staff said. To remain below the 80% federal funding threshold, the city will request $9.7 million from FHWA; the state match is listed at $2.4 million and the city match at $500,000. Josh said the city will be "on the hook for $500,000 match if awarded." The commission voted to authorize submission of the application.
Staff framed the project as a continuation of prior planning for improved intersection safety and connectivity and said the work is intended to reduce traffic pressure within downtown, improve connections at state routes and mitigate pedestrian-safety concerns near Danville High School. The application and the match commitment were authorized; staff will finalize and submit the grant paperwork.
If the grant is awarded, the city will need to coordinate engineering, right-of-way and funding steps with state and federal partners; the transcript records no final award decision at this meeting and the authorization is limited to applying for funds.
