The Danville City Commission voted May 11 to approve an amendment extending its solid-waste contract with Republic Services through June 30, 2030. Staff described the key terms and fielded commissioner questions about public notice and operational logistics.
According to the staff presentation, the amended contract sets a base monthly bill of $14.94, which includes one 96-gallon cart for garbage collection. Recycling will be offered as an opt-in service billed quarterly at $6.85 per month for participating customers, and additional trash carts will be available for an extra $5 per month (billed quarterly by Republic Services). Implementation of the new billing will begin July 1, and staff said they will run a public-education campaign in the weeks before the change to help residents understand how to opt in or request additional carts.
Commissioners and staff discussed special challenges downtown, where multi-unit buildings and constrained storage make automated cart collection more complicated. Staff said prior efforts to convert downtown commercial pick-up to large containers have struggled to find appropriate placements for dumpsters; Republic Services has signaled willingness to work with the city on downtown-specific solutions, but staff cautioned additional contract or ordinance tweaks may be necessary. Josh (staff) said the city is auditing downtown service needs and expects to bring further recommendations later this year.
Commissioners also voiced concern about ensuring residents receive adequate advance notice about how billing will change. Staff indicated the city will provide a sustained outreach effort over June and July and coordinate with Republic Services on roll-out logistics. The commission approved the contract extension on a voice vote.
The transcript records practical implementation concerns but no formal amendments to the contract at the meeting; commissioners directed staff to prioritize resident education and to explore downtown-specific collection options.
