At the public comment portion of the meeting, Tylie Klein asked the board to allow staff to explore a pilot elementary volleyball program spanning third through fifth grades.
Klein described a compact model: five-week seasons aligned with junior high nights, three short games per match (30–45 minutes), eight-player rosters and an added $10 per game to referee pay to cover the extra matches. She said three principals have already expressed preliminary support and that coaches she contacted indicated willingness to take on additional players.
Staff and board members responded that the program could be piloted at a small number of schools to test demand and logistics. Assistant Superintendent Keith Stewart said principals and coaches will need to confirm availability and that the county must consider officials’ availability and the long-term costs for coaching stipends, retirement and benefits. Board members flagged that any additional coaching or official pay would need to be accounted for in budget decisions and that the program should be developed in coordination with principals.
Klein requested permission to continue discussions with principals and coaches; staff agreed to work with her and report back with estimates and a plan if interest persists.
