Shelby issues Buddy Poppy and Mental Health Awareness Month proclamations

Shelby, May 6 — The Shelby City Council presented two proclamations Tuesday: one recognizing the American Legion Auxiliary’s Buddy Poppy distribution and one declaring May 2024 as Mental Health Awareness Month.
Mayor Steven Al read a proclamation honoring the Buddy Poppy campaign and asked residents to support the Auxiliary’s May 17–18 activities. Linda Feer of the American Legion Auxiliary accepted the proclamation and noted volunteers will be distributing poppies and accepting donations to aid disabled veterans.
The council also presented a proclamation to Richmond County Behavioral Health and Recovery Services (represented in the meeting by Carrie), recognizing May as Mental Health Awareness Month. Carrie provided a packet of local resource materials and highlighted several May events, including an adult‑focused screening for parents and caregivers and a downtown mental‑health walk; she also described the county’s Behavioral Health Urgent Care and other crisis services and urged residents to consult the county one‑pager for local contacts.
Both proclamations were ceremonial; no formal votes were required beyond the customary passage on the consent or proclamation portion of the agenda.
