Shelby council backs America250 designation; historical society outlines mobile exhibit grant

Shelby City Council voted to adopt Resolution 41-2024, authorizing the mayor to support the Ohio America250 program and related community programming.

During discussion Christina Dra, speaking on behalf of the Shelby Cycle Historical Society, described a $5,000 America250 Ohio grant to develop a portable exhibit about Shelby’s early steel-tube and bicycle industry and said the society plans to display the exhibit at local and regional venues in 2025. "We have to have a city representative and a nonprofit representative," she said, and said Mayor Shang agreed to serve as the city representative while the Historical Society would act as the nonprofit partner.

Dra outlined additional activities tied to the state's America250 initiative: genealogy projects highlighting early Shelby homesteaders, celebration of the 200th anniversary of First United Methodist Church, and events timed with local festivals such as Shelby Bicycle Days. She emphasized the designation is honorific and carries no direct city cost, beyond staff support and coordination for a local committee or task force to plan events.

Councilmembers supported forming an ad hoc committee or task force to coordinate city activities during the 250th anniversary period. The resolution passed by roll call; no funding commitment by the city was required as part of the designation.

Next steps: council will consider forming an ad hoc committee/task force to coordinate local America250 events and staff will liaise with the Historical Society to integrate the grant-funded exhibit into local programming.
