District IT staff reviews cybersecurity posture and volunteer state response support

District technology staff delivered an overview of the district’s cybersecurity program, emphasizing three priorities: protecting student and staff data, maintaining instructional continuity and keeping district operations running during incidents.

The presenter, identified in the meeting as Brandon (IT staff), described tools and practices the district has adopted: SentinelOne for advanced endpoint protection, 24/7 monitoring through a managed-detection provider (Uncommon X), regular phishing simulations for staff awareness and an internal cadence of practice and planning the district calls "Cyber Mondays" to track prioritized tasks and strengthen recovery steps.

Brandon also explained the district’s relationship with the Wisconsin Cyber Response Team, a statewide volunteer network that provides rapid, no-cost incident support to schools and municipal entities. "We get access to a network of cybersecurity experts beyond our school district," he said, describing the team’s role in log review, rapid on-site assistance and shared incident learning.

Board members asked about specific vendor uses (for example, Canvas in dual-credit contexts) and about staff training exercises; administration said the district has tabletop exercises and post-incident processes coordinated with its insurer. The presenter stressed that the district uses the neutral term "cyber incident" until the nature of an event is confirmed for liability reasons.

Administration said they will continue to report on cybersecurity activity and that ongoing vendor reviews include privacy, AI and ADA compliance checks for instructional applications.
