Alex Magayanes, economic development specialist for the Town of Sahuarita, and Dustin Sinclair, the town’s communications specialist, used a recent Grow Sahuarita podcast episode to give home-based and micro-business owners practical guidance on marketing, multimedia production and where to get no‑cost help from the town.
The hosts framed the episode around the program’s clients: "I think it's 73%... the stats say that 73% of our business owners are homebased," Magayanes said, describing why the episode focused on simple, low-cost tools that entrepreneurs can use from home. The two encouraged owners to tell the story behind their products with photos and short videos to build trust and interest.
Sinclair emphasized that smartphones are often sufficient: "With your smartphone, you can do a lot," he said, and advised sellers to show the product and the process—ingredients for baked goods or steps in a craft project—instead of only polished final shots. He recommended shooting many photos and keeping an archive so owners can repurpose content later.
On editing and design tools, Sinclair suggested DaVinci Resolve as a robust free option and contrasted it with paid software such as Adobe Premiere. For quick social graphics, he recommended Canva as an accessible choice for entrepreneurs who need to produce Facebook- and Instagram-ready images rapidly. He also described how AI can be used as a drafting and summarizing tool—"a blueprint"—rather than a final copy generator.
The hosts talked through basic lighting advice for product photography—using diffuse "soft" light rather than harsh overhead bulbs—and encouraged experimenting with angles and inexpensive LED lights. They also urged listeners to follow social-media trends and create short, attention-grabbing clips (roughly 30 seconds) that can be adapted to fit a business’s unique angle.
Magayanes and Sinclair closed by reminding listeners that Grow Sahuarita offers free one-on-one coaching to help local entrepreneurs put these strategies into practice. They said staff and business coaches are available through the program’s business page on the Town of Sahuarita website for scheduling and follow-up.
The episode also noted the Town’s annual State of the Town event each September and rising attendance there, which Magayanes said has more than doubled in recent years. The hosts encouraged listeners to reach out with questions and suggested the episode’s tools and tactics as low-cost ways to improve online marketing and customer engagement.
