Lee County opens new North Fort Myers shuffleboard courts after $2.2 million upgrade

Lee County officials on May 16, 2026, celebrated the completion of a $2.2 million upgrade to the North Fort Myers shuffleboard courts, unveiling an 18,000-square-foot shaded structure, new LED lighting and other amenities designed to allow play year-round.
"This project actually represents Lee County's commitment to responding to community needs," said Commissioner Brian Hammond, who represents District 4 and led the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Hammond told attendees the effort began roughly a decade ago after conversations with members of the local shuffleboard club and weather- and pandemic-related delays, and thanked county commissioners and staff for their support.
Mac Young, the county’s parks and recreation director, thanked contractors and county staff and said the covered courts and new lighting will expand opportunities for evening tournaments and casual play. "This is huge for all you guys," Young said, addressing club members gathered for the ceremony.
Ehab Gus, director of Facilities Construction and Management, described the project scope and cost. "This $2.2 million project includes an 18,000-square-foot structure and a scoreboard at each court," Gus said, adding that the work also included new LED lights and fans, resurfaced courts, restored and expanded memorial pavers, new fencing, gates, benches, and storage facilities.
Hammond said the improvements were designed with players in mind and aimed to preserve traditions while preparing the facility for future generations. He recognized county management, parks staff and procurement and community engagement teams for their roles in the project and thanked first responders who attended the event.
After remarks, county officials invited the shuffleboard club president, contractors and staff to the ribbon line for photos; they staged a photograph and then performed the ceremonial ribbon cutting to conclude the event.
No formal vote or further county action was announced at the ceremony; county officials described the event as a celebration of the completed capital project and encouraged residents to use the upgraded facility.
