The Cathedral City Public Arts Commission agreed May 12 to take June off and to keep July and August meeting availability so it could run a timely call and selection process for a grant‑funded mural at Espironza Park.
Staff outlined a $50,000 California Art and Parks grant for a mural on the back of the Espironza Park restroom building facing CV Link; the grant requires the mural to be completed and expenditures submitted by Oct. 30. Staff said the commission would narrow finalists in July, solicit community input, and return a recommendation to council by August so the mural could be installed and community painting events scheduled for September and October.
Commissioners discussed scheduling and outreach to ensure community participation, including online surveys and door‑to‑door outreach in neighborhoods with limited internet access. Staff said the call for artists would be published by Thursday and that the grant requires California‑based artists; staff will emphasize candidates with experience in community‑partnered mural work.
The commission moved and approved a plan to go dark for the June meeting only and continue with selection work in July and August so the mural can meet grant deadlines.
