Barbara Basavan, a visual artist and adjunct photography professor at College of the Desert, asked the commission to help identify grants and partnerships to launch a community‑based photography center in the Perez Art District. Basavan said the center would offer darkroom and digital classes, mentorships, workshops with visiting professionals, and equipment access with a special emphasis on underserved youth; she said she is forming a 501(c)(3) and invited the commission to an exhibit of her advanced students scheduled for May 22.
Commissioners thanked both speakers, asked brief clarifying questions about funding requests and facilities, and noted those suggestions when discussing future community programming. No formal action was taken; both proposals were recorded during public comment and may be considered for future agenda items or funding opportunities.
