Public Arts Commission recommends 'Crimson Sentinel' for Espironza Park

The Cathedral City Public Arts Commission voted May 12 to recommend CJ Wrench’s sculpture, Crimson Sentinel, as the selected public artwork for the Espironza Park roundabout and to forward that recommendation to the City Council for an award of contract.

Staff told commissioners the call for artists, launched in September 2025, drew 148 submissions and included public outreach via an online survey and door‑to‑door solicitation. Staff reported community voting totals that favored Crimson Sentinel (254 votes), followed closely by The Flower of Esparonza (245). “The community has had an important say in every aspect of that park’s development,” a staff member said during the presentation.

Under the proposed contract, the selected artist would receive $100,000 to cover fabrication, artist fees, transport and related work; staff also said the project budget includes additional funding for installation costs such as concrete and lighting. Commissioners discussed outreach methods and the comparative vote totals before moving the recommendation.

Vice Chair Travis moved to select Crimson Sentinel and Commissioner Stouter seconded; the motion carried. Chair Lee Belt said staff will negotiate the contract and return installation schedules and updates to the commission as the project moves toward the City Council vote on May 27.

The commission’s recommendation is advisory pending City Council approval and award of the fabrication contract. If council approves, staff will develop an installation timeline and public‑facing schedule for unveiling the sculpture.
