Winter Haven moves forward on airport upgrades, accepts state grant for high-security gate

The Winter Haven City Commission on May 11 approved measures to cover terminal repairs and a new high-security gate at Winter Haven Regional Airport, Gilbert Field.
City staff told commissioners that Ascent Aviation Group provided a $50,000 business development grant tied to the airport. Airport staff proposed recognizing $34,280 of commission fuel revenue to pay Envirrobuild’s quote for new carpeting in the terminal; the commission approved the budget amendment on second reading. Vanessa Castillo, city clerk, accepted the public-works proclamation earlier in the meeting and thanked staff for their work in maintaining city facilities.
Separately, the commission approved Resolution R-26-14 to accept a public transportation grant from the Florida Department of Transportation (contract G30007, financial project 4581-61-1-94-1) to replace gate 19 with a high-security hydraulic sliding gate. Staff said the project’s estimated cost is $40,000, with FDOT covering 80 percent and the city’s 20 percent share (about $8,000) available in the airport’s repair-and-maintenance account. The resolution authorizes the city manager to execute the grant agreement and take necessary implementation steps.
The approvals were carried by voice vote. Staff will proceed with contractor coordination and procurement as required for both installations.
