Board authorizes superintendent to pursue road-around-campus option for Oakwood Elementary

The Caswell County Board of Education authorized the superintendent on May 11 to pursue the option of building a driveway around Oakwood Elementary as recommended in a traffic-operation analysis jointly reviewed with state DOT representatives.
Staff presented two feasible designs from the DOT: one would create a front “snake” driveway into the campus and convert it to two lanes; the alternative would add a driveway looping around the building with a rear drop zone near the cafeteria. The rear-drive option was presented as less costly, better for maintenance and more useful for ADA compliance because it could connect sidewalks and make wheelchair evacuation routes practical.
Board members raised safety and supervision concerns for children playing on playground areas adjacent to proposed driveways, as well as questions about parking and the potential need for gates or temporary traffic-control poles during arrival and dismissal. The superintendent said DOT will help pursue funding; if the board approves an option, DOT will submit the selected design for a funding source.
After discussion the board voted to authorize the superintendent to move forward with the driveway-around-the-building option and to submit the approved option to DOT for funding consideration. The motion carried by voice vote; the board directed staff to return with refined designs and cost estimates and to consider site supervision and traffic-control measures during implementation.
