Joanna Giddings of 503 Oakridge Drive addressed the council during public comment to urge caution about municipal pesticide use and to encourage the council to consider ecosystem and public-health impacts.
Giddings recounted a 2019 incident in which chemical drift while she worked in her garden caused prolonged coughing, hundreds of dead pollinators and persistent sensitivity to chemicals. She criticized mass spraying for mosquitoes and ticks as ineffective and harmful to beneficial insects, cited expert recommendations to reduce standing water and use repellents, and argued that lawn chemicals concentrate in groundwater and are not sustainable.
She asked the council to remain informed about chemical risks and to consider local policy or education measures to reduce unnecessary spraying and protect residents and pollinators.
Council response: Chair thanked Ms. Giddings; no formal follow-up or policy motion was made during the meeting.
