Superintendent reports Energy Express summer sites, budget uncertainty and Mullen PreK–8 construction progress

Superintendent Mr. Stewart told the board the district’s Energy Express summer program and AIM enrichment are set to begin in mid‑June and will run for roughly six weeks at two sites, with site coordinators and student helpers in place and bus routing still being finalized.
"That program will start in mid June and run for six weeks," Stewart said, adding that the district is working on bus runs and that staff will follow up as applications and numbers come in.
Stewart and other administrators also described ongoing budget reviews with uncertainty about federal funding, and previewed multiple summer activities: a county speaking contest at the board office, a resource/career fair hosted by the office of special programs, and professional development planning now that curriculum adoptions are set.
On facilities, Stewart updated the board on Mullen’s PreK–8 construction: trailers are on site, temporary power and Wi‑Fi are in place, grading and rubble removal are complete, materials are arriving and rebar will arrive to begin footer work. He said the board will be asked soon to approve a third‑party materials testing recommendation for concrete and footers.
Stewart also reported conversations with HVAC contractors to prioritize aging units across the county and noted pre‑bid meetings and bid openings for planned security entrance projects at county schools.
The superintendent’s report included recognition items: county nominations for state Teacher and Service Person of the Year have been submitted, staff attended a special education conference with follow‑up training planned, and the board was encouraged to attend upcoming events and bid openings.
