Wyoming County board approves social studies and Pre-K curriculum adoptions, passes consent and personnel items

Miss Khosy Mitchell, superintendent of curriculum and instruction, summarized the social studies committee’s recommendations, saying the committee concluded votes last week and recommended K–5 use teacher‑created materials, grades 6–7 adopt McGraw Hill materials, grade 8 use a West Virginia history text from Claremont Press, and secondary courses generally use McGraw Hill with named exceptions. "I do support the committee's recommendations," Mitchell said before the board seconded and approved the adoption.
The board also approved the recommended Pre‑K curriculum, Frog Street, after committee members described an intensive review process and expressed enthusiasm for the planned implementation.
The consent agenda — covering minutes, extracurricular and fundraising requests, bus requests and invoice payments — was presented with edits called out for two line items (a request on page 50 that the clerk asked be removed and a change to a request on page 52F). The clerk recommended removing the page‑50 request and adjusting the 52F submission; the board approved the corrected consent agenda.
On personnel matters, the board approved the presented personnel list, including coaching posts and other hires, and separately approved a memorandum of understanding with Concord University to host clinical students, student teachers and resident teachers. Board members noted a strong return of student teachers to the county and described the Concord agreement as part of a local teacher pipeline strategy.
Votes were taken by voice; the transcript records motions, seconds and unanimous or majority "in favor" voice approval but does not record a roll‑call tally for each motion. The board set its next meeting for May 22 and adjourned.
